Kingfisher County Democrats Prepare for Campaign
District 20 Democratic candidates and the Oklahoma state director of the Obama campaign met with Kingfisher County Democrats January 17th at the NBC bank community room in Kingfisher. A large turnout of county party members and guests visited with Magnus Scott, candidate for the state senate; Lisa Benson, candidate for Kingfisher County Clerk, and Miguel Medrano, the Obama campaign's state director.
Miguel Medrano shared campaign strategies learned from his visit with the Obama organization meeting in Chicago and emphasized the importance of registering voters and involving young people in the political process. He told the group that the Obama campaign considers Oklahoma important in the success of the 270 Plan, a full 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, and he detailed training opportunities available for participants wishing to be effective in making their voices heard. Medrano urged the assembled citizens to research the issues and separate facts from misinformation, then advocate with passion and courage.
Following Medrano, Magnus Scott, the Democratic candidate for the District 20 Senate seat, spoke with great passion about his concerns for Oklahoma education, economic development, and agriculture. He especially expressed concern about the legislative challenges that weaken the family farms. Scott said, "You cannot say I'm serving the people and make laws that hurt the people you serve." His campaign, led by the former mayor of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Ms. Evelyn Nephew, will address the Oklahoma state laws that hinder the social and economic progress of Oklahoma.
Finally, the Democratic candidate for Kingfisher Court Clerk, Lisa Benson spoke to the group, outlining her reasons for wishing to make the move from the District Attorney's office where she has served for 5 years to the court. A graduate of Dover High School and Oklahoma State University, she expressed the desire to do more for the public than serve in an area of criminal prosecution. Her family is native to Kingfisher County, her life is here, and she shared that she wants to serve Kingfisher in the most positive way possible.
In a brief business meeting led by Worth Lambert, Kingfisher County Chair, the group heard a report on the progress of the quilt being crafted for the quilt raffle to raise funds for a $500 scholarship for a Kingfisher County senior. The group will meet next on February 21st, 7pm, at Snyder Catering for a dinner and time of fellowship.
